Zing Zong and Zang Zong appeared in the December 1969 Woman's Day magazine story "The Purple-Necked Black-Bearded Blatch." A pair of fun loving twins, they inadvertently teach Mr. Figg the true meaning of Christmas. Mr. Figg continually roars at the siblings and attempts to best them through the means of a Purple-Necked Black-Bearded Blatch, but the children fall in love with the creature and ultimately give him back to Mr. Figg as a present, teaching him the true meaning of Christmas.
