Willie Nelson (b. 1933) is a country music singer who covered "The Rainbow Connection" on his 2001 album of the same name. In 2005, Nelson also performed the song with Gonzo for the Paul Williams DVD/CD release I'm Going Back There Someday. On June 14 of that year, he and Judy Collins appeared with Kermit the Frog prior to the National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame's 32nd annual induction and awards ceremony. He was a member of the country supergroup The Highwaymen in the late 1980s, with Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

Nelson also composed "On the Road Again," which was performed in episode 109 of The Jim Henson Hour and the Disney MGM-Studios stage show Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses.
