"Wichita Lineman" is a song popularized by Glen Campbell about a telephone lineman's longing for a former lover who he imagines he can hear "singing in the wire" that he is working on.
In episode 108 of The Muppet Show, Hilda notices Fozzie rehearsing backstage for his role as the telephone pole in the "Telephone Pole Bit" he plans on performing with Scooter later in the show. Just as she declares that no one would believe he was a telephone pole, a blue Whatnot in a construction hat walks by and, singing the first line of "Wichita Lineman," strings a telephone wire across Fozzie's nose.
