Thought to be derived from the 1896 hymn "When the Saints Are Marching In" by Katherine Purvis and James Black, "When the Saints Go Marching In" was first published in a 1927 hymnal by Edward Boatner called "Spirituals Triumphant - Old and New". Due to the simple repetitive nature of the song there is no official or standard set of lyrics, with each performer adding and modifying verses as desired.

It was performed by Hal Linden and the Electric Mayhem on episode 517 of The Muppet Show. Unfortunately, Beauregard chooses that time to test the onstage trap-door releases, causing Hal and the other performers to keep falling through the stage floor.
