Sparrow in "The Soldier and Death"

Walter Sparrow (1927-2000) was a British character actor who played the card trick beggar in The StoryTeller episode "The Soldier and Death."

Sparrow began his career as a stand-up comic and entered films in 1964, in Dr. Terror's House of Horrors. Subsequent films, interspersed between countless TV appearances, included the 1969 sex fantasy Zeta One, Young Sherlock Holmes, and the acclaimed 1988 film The Accidental Tourist (with William Hurt and Geena Davis). He enjoyed a resurgence in the 1990s, with key roles in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (as blind retainer Duncan), The Secret Garden (as gruff gardener Ben Weatherstaff), the American film Now and Then (as tragic drifter Crazy Pete), and Prometheus (as Granddad, an ancient miner engaged in an argument with the Greek god Hermes).

Sparrow's even more prolific TV appearances included regular roles in the soap opera Emmerdale Farm (as two different characters) and the comedy Paris, and guest spots on All Creatures Great and Small, Alias Smith and Jones, Rumpole of the Bailey, One Foot in the Grave, and The Bill. One of his more notable guest appearances was in a 1989 episode of the sitcom Only Fools and Horses, which had unusually high ratings of 16.1 million viewers, as porn shop owner Dirty Barry[1]
