Emmet-2021-05
Written by Paul Williams
Date 2008

"Trust" is a song from the 2008 musical Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. It is sung by the squirrels and Emmet, as they encourage him to take chances in life, i.e. put a hole in his mother's washtub, by trusting "that branch you land on." Their enthusiasm is dampened when they find out Emmet is planning to join the same Waterville talent contest they are competing in as a flying squirrel act. This prompts Emmet to take over the song and give them their own advice, which gives him the confidence to take his own chance.

In the original 2008 run of the show, the song was performed by the Squirrels and Jane, a human character who finds herself within the world of the book. This was altered to its current version in 2009 when the plot was changed, so that Jane was no longer a part of the main story. However, she sang a reprise of the song in Act 2 during a brief fantasy sequence where she encounters the squirrels. This reprise, along with the entire Jane character, was cut from subsequent productions.

It was also performed by Rosie O'Donnell and the squirrels for the benefit Rosie's Broadway Extravaganza.
