Childhood

He, as a child, grew up in Webster, South Dakota and then moved to Pickstown and joined the local baseball team. Eventually, when he was about 10, he moved to the big town of Yankton, South Dakota. His father, Anthony "Red" Brokaw, was a construction worker and farmer. Tom helped out on the farm a lot. Red always said "Work comes first, last, and always." His mother, Jean Conley Brokaw, wanted to be a journalist and that's what inspired Tom. When he was a teen, he was interested in radio. He did a program called "Terrible Tom," in the same sense as "bein' bad." in the '50s. He played things like Elvis music and all the hot, new songs. He enrolled at the University of South Dakota in 1964 with a B.A. in political science, but had trouble and took four times to win it. He used a lot of drugs and goofed off in college. He even joked he majored in "beer and co-eds." He learned his lesson, though. In his latter years at college, he met Meredith Lynn Auld, (Miss South Dakota,) who he later married and had four daughters. Jennifer, Sarah, and Andrea.

Career at NBC News

Brokaw joined NBC News in 1966 and worked for the KNBC local station in Los Angeles, California. He was called "the best one" by co-workers and got all the good stories. In 1973, he became NBC Chief White House Correspondent during Watergate. He had to study a lot and be unbiased about the case and he did that. He had to be very authoritative, too. He left being NBC White House Correspondent in 1976 when Barbara Walters left Today on NBC. He took the opportunity to be the anchor of Today and got the job. He worked with Jane Pauley and covered stories like the marriage of Princess Diana, the murder of John Lennon, and the inauguration of Ronald Reagan. He did it all without shedding a tear.
