  • Wow, where has the time gone? This Saturday, December 5, 2015, marks the 10th anniversary of Muppet Wiki's launch. 10 years!

I remember it (mostly) very clearly: Danny and I were on the phone from Philly and Boston, respectively, and we were talking about the emerging world of collaborative wikis. He suggested that with our group of friends and experts that we start doing something for the Muppets. "Why don't we do it on a Wikipedia Hub and extend the reach of potential contributors?", I suggested. I can't remember his exact response, but his insistence that we do it in our own space was obviously the right way to go. I can't imagine anyone other than the small group of folks we started out with to administer an encyclopedia as thorough and accurate as we've become... with the notable exception of all the great people who have joined us in the past decade.

28,500+ articles, 102,000+ images, and 830,800+ edits later I'm extremely proud of the work we've done, the difficult areas we've worked through, and the joy we've created for ourselves and the visitors who continue to be amazed when they stumble upon our treasure trove of wonderful absurdities. I want to extend an enormous, heartfelt thank you to everyone who has worked on this project: You're Doing Jim's Work.

Although I've been thinking about it for months, I'm afraid the anniversary comes with less pomp and circumstance than I'd have liked. I haven't had a whole lot of time lately to spend curating content for social media, much less designing a "10 years" logo or anything like that. I'll be doing something on Facebook, but I'm not exactly sure what yet... but I also don't want to overdo it. I'm taking suggestions if anyone has any ideas. In lieu of fancy 10 Year Anniversary contests or other big celebrations we can't do for lack of our own marketing team, I hope the content we've so lovingly created over the past decade speaks for itself. We have some really outstanding articles, lists, galleries, and oddities; I'm always happy to see what everyone's favorites are.

So, thanks again to everyone for being truly amazing. This wiki has been our life's blood and passion, and I can't wait to see what we have in store for the next ten years! Please feel free to share your thoughts, your stories, your favorite articles, our best achievements, and everything at Muppet Wiki that's made the world a better place.

    • One story I just recalled comes from 2008 when Danny and I had a booth at WonderCon in San Francisco. We set up some laptops with the intention of introducing people to the concept of wikis (outside of Wikipedia, which everyone knew about) and how easy it is to edit them, etc. We had a wide range of reactions from different types of people when they'd see Wookiepedia (also celebrating their decennial this year) or Marvel Database, but we almost always got a smile when we showed off Muppet Wiki.

Our favorite was probably a little girl and her big brother who happened by one of the laptops that we'd left the Super Grover article up on, who just couldn't get over their excitement. "Oh, wow, look at this!" As they scrolled through the list of sketches, they took turns pointing out their favorites and their amazement increased when they realized that there were just more and more of them. "Look at how many of them they have!" Clearly these kids weren't just Super Grover fans, but they were fans of lists. Our people.

It was a really heartwarming moment for us, and lent some validation to the work we were doing. I hope those kids, probably in their teens and 20s now, found us again and bookmarked us. Wiki editors in the making right there.

    • Lead text to Sheep, which I'd forgotten I wrote: "Sheep are wool-bearing mammals and a lynchpin of the textile industry. They traditionally gather in flocks, and must be carefully herded. In nursery rhymes, they are said to follow their owners to school, and come home wagging their tails behind them."

I love that we can do that on Muppet Wiki (The Moon is another fine example).

Wow, how the time flies! I just created a page to celebrate some of our bigger accomplishments in a Count von Count fashion. Check out:
      Muppet Wiki by the numbers

Please feel free to update, expand and improve upon it (as our best work is always when we collaboratively work on things together).

    • For the last ten years, Muppet Wiki has been one of the great joys of my life, and one of the things I'm most proud of. People at Wikia always use Muppet Wiki as the example of a smart, warm, productive community building something together because we love it, and we love working together.

There's information on this wiki that's never been compiled anywhere else, and we've made it available for everybody in the world, now and forever, and it's sweet and funny and smart and fearless.

And it's huge! Like, ridiculously huge. Bigger and crazier than any of us could have expected.

Scott, I've been thinking it over, and I think we should go ahead and do it. Let's make a wiki about the Muppets.

Six words became... who knows? You had ten years to decide... now, let's do more. We're not even close to complete, and we never will be, in fact!

    • I love Muppet Wiki by the numbers! I just added some code that combines the number of articles for three different categories. I've been using PAGESINCATEGORY on my user page as a quick preview, and I've always hoped to find a way to add up everyone who has been a guest on a Sesame Street project. It doesn't include online guests as that category also includes non-Sesame projects, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Anyway, the number was important to me because Sesame Workshop once claimed that they'd had 'x' amount of celebrities on over the years. I forget what the number was (and the source), but it was way off from what we had at the time, even accounting for those who appeared in specials and videos. So, it's just nice to have that number quickly available somewhere now.

I've listed many of my favorite wiki articles and creations on my user page.

I love that we've taken things that may seem like trivial details, frivolous mentions or passing gags (such as Modulate!, Hubba-wha?, amphibitarianism, bouncing baby figs, "Muppets Underwater," and Manolo) and curated them into unique and interesting articles. I also love our rumor busting and false perceptions busting.

We haven't added anything to Quality Articles in well over 5 years! Is that a category and concept we're just abandoning? Or is that something worth revisiting and expanding as we enter our tenth year? We've certainly developed some quality things in the page 5 years. Perhaps that's a question and discussion for another thread.

What number did we have then and how much now? Either way, was it more or less?

Admittedly, we may have to archive and/or rename the page after the event, but it still looks great.

Most of the page is built using "magic words" that update the numbers automatically, so the page can easily stay up-to-date and will be simple to maintain and keep accurate and relevant as the wiki continues to grow.

Okay, then. I know that it was built around magic words, and if no one objects to it, I'm all for it. YAY!!!

    • I was going to wait until Saturday to say something, but since Scott started this thread, I'll go ahead and say it now. The wiki was something I didn't know I was looking for, until I found it. I've been keeping my own research for Muppet records all of my life, but since there weren't any reference books about them (and there still aren't!), I was so glad to finally have a place to publish what I knew, as well as find out about other stuff that I didn't know about! I wish I had been here from the very first day, but I joined in early 2007, as soon as I discovered this place. Over the last 10 years, thanks to the wiki, as well as the Internet in general, we've been able to document things like the cover and song changes on classic Sesame Street albums, how many different countries released Sesame Street Fever, albums in foreign languages, and every format from 45's, LP's, 8-tracks and cassettes, to CD's and downloads. I'm sure the people who are heavily into the books and video items have similar thoughts, but I wanted to share as a record collector/historian, because my love for music and record collecting can be traced back to The Sesame Street Book & Record, which I think I have about 5 times on various formats!

      Happy 10th birthday, Muppet Wiki!

Danny and I used to say something like this frequently in the wiki's early years. We Muppet fans had been making lists in our heads our entire lives, completely unaware that we were building our wiki resumés :)

Yay! We've heard similar things from authors of non-fiction books written since the wiki launched, as well as people working on movies and other Muppet projects, so that's really rewarding to hear!

It's my hope that just as Disney and Marvel go to the Star Wars and Marvel Comics wikis to research information for official projects, so do writers and creators for Muppet projects. It's also a nice reminder of how important it is that we source information and something to be proud of :)

    • Wow...ten years. One decade. It is hard to believe we've made it this far!

I've known about this Wiki since the Spring of 2006, just a couple of months after this Wiki was created (and I even remember when Wikia used to be called Wikicities). I didn't edit here too much when I first discovered the place, but I did contribute under a couple of handles, namely User:E-muppet and User:TonieBoy. Eventually about a year later, I decided to permanently start editing under my current name, since that was also my name on Wikipedia and to avoid confusion. I've worked with great contributors here, and am happy to have helped make this place the best source of information for the Muppets and Sesame Street. There are still episode pages and guides missing, but hopefully the entire show's run can be documented within the next ten years.

It's amazing how far Muppet Wiki has come since its inception exactly ten years ago today. A big congratulations to Danny and Scott (and other admins) for helping develop and maintain this great place!

Looking at the page history for the Main Page, it appears it was at 15:02 UTC.

    • Thanks for the quote, Scott! 2 other things that made my mouth fall open when I found them on the wiki were the list of Ernie and Bert sketches, and the list of Gonzo's mallet/trumpet mishaps. Those are the kinds of "I wonder how many of those there are?" lists that I've spent my life wondering about.

I also wrote out a list of all 120 Muppet Show guest stars by season, copied from Of Muppets and Men back in 1981, and I still have it! I think I made it because The Muppet Show had just gone into reruns of the entire series for the first time that fall, and I think I was going to check them off as I saw them. I knew that I had seen every one the first time around, but I hadn't seen the first season episodes in 5 years, which was half of my lifetime at that point! Needless to say, it was a very interesting experience to watch Seasons 1-3 on DVD straight through, many years later, and I was equally surprised by what I remembered, and by what I had forgotten. And of course, I would come back to the wiki, and read through the episodes. And I had never heard of the UK Spots until I came here. If it hadn't been for the wiki, I would have just assumed they were more bits I had seen many years ago but had forgotten about!
