PERFORMER Richard Hunt

The Invisible Man is the title character of H.G. Wells' 1897 novel, which has spawned film adaptations and numerous derivatives, with the same concept but a different invisible protagonist.

Appearances[]

Kermit notes that his guest is world-famous for his invisibility. The Invisible Man is garrulous and friendly, with a vaudevillian manner, though he briefly baffles Kermit when he takes his straw hat off. When quizzed as to his profession, the Invisible Man proudly explains that he's a tap dancer. With very little cajoling, he performs a buck and wing for the cameras (as Kermit asks the cameraman for a close-up).
In this depiction, invisibility is not the result of scientific experimentation. Rather, it appears to be a hereditary trait, as evidenced by the Invisible Man's large family. His wife, in a conical hat, is Cynthia (voiced by Frank Oz). At the interview's end, Kermit pauses to wonder whether the Invisible Clan is wearing any other clothing.

  • The March 25 and October 28, 1959 episodes of Sam and Friends used a recording of Alice Pearce singing "The Invisible Man" from Monster Rally. Although the visuals of the episode are lost, the song's protagonist sings about how she's been dating The Invisible Man.
  • On the yearbook staff page of The Amphibian, all of the staffers have paper bags over their heads and they're given the names of people/things that famously disappeared, were invisible, or obscured their appearance, including Claude Rains (spelled Raines) who starred as The Invisible Man (1933 film).
  • While Olivia and Susan are looking for a movie to go see in Sesame Street Episode 1822, Olivia reads the paper and suggests, "Hey, what about The Invisible Man with Claude Rains?"
