The Dark Crystal read-along came with a 7" 33 1/3 RPM record, and a 24-page storybook, illustrated with scenes from the film. The book was written by Ted Kryczko and Jymn Magon.

The book and record were later re-released (as a book and audio cassette set) in a "read-along double set" paired with The Black Stallion Returns.
