Several sketches on The Muppet Show had their own recurring Announcer. A male voice provided the intros and outros for the Vet's Hospital, Pigs in Space and Bear on Patrol sketches. The characters on stage would often looking around to try and find the source of this mystery voice.
Unseen for five seasons, he finally appears in episode 501. To back up a claim that the end of the world is coming, Beauregard predicts in Vet's Hospital that something will happen there that has never happened before. Indeed, as he begins to sign off, the Announcer plummets to the operating table, squashing Beau. Later, the crew of the Swinetrek, upon reaching the end of the universe, has missed The Meaning and Purpose of Life on account of swill stroganoff. When the Announcer taunts that he knows what they don't, First Mate Piggy activates a lever which drops him onto the set.
John Lovelady (and sometimes Jerry) performed the Announcer during season one.
