Talkingmachine
The Talking Machine on The Muppet Show
PERFORMER Jim Henson 1967
  Jerry Nelson 1977
DEBUT 1967

The Talking Machine appears in a repeated Muppet sketch called "Coffee Break Machine," which starred an early version of Cookie Monster. An ornate device which had eyes attached to its tape reel, the machine offered a monotone "recorded analytic program read-out," describing its various parts, which in turn were eaten by the monster.

The sketch was performed on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1967, and again a year later in an IBM training film (where it was repurposed to be a coffee machine with an explosive anti-vandalism program), and once again with Luncheon Counter Monster on Episode 210 of The Muppet Show. The machine's droning speech is nearly identical in every iteration, always concluding with the revelation that it is a powerful explosive device. The monster realizes what it has done too late, as the next moment it destructs.

In 1987, the sketch was remade as a Muppet Meeting Film, where the machine is updated to "The Comp-U-Coffee 2000" and functions once again as a coffee maker. As in the Muppet Show version, Luncheon Counter Monster ate the machine piece by piece, only to get blown up in the end.
