Big Bird satellite
Edit
Nick added the picture of the "Big Bird" satellite from Popular Mechanics. It's not clear to me that the name is supposed to really be a reference to the Sesame character. I mean, obviously, when you use the phrase Big Bird in 1984, people recognize that it's also the name of a Muppet, but I don't know if we could say that the satellite was "named after" the Muppet for any particular reason. The satellite was supposed to fly over Russia and keep an eye on things, like a big bird hovering in the sky. So does that count as a Muppet reference? -- Danny (talk) 21:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- The actual article, as glimpsed here, uses it only in the context of a nickname for the device, with nothing to indicate it was an intentional reference. Other devices are named Cobra Dane. In fact, Wikipedia has an article on the satellite, with absolutely nothing to indicate a deliberate Sesame connection or reference (it was a bulky reconnaisance device) and none of the articles about the satellites ever mention Sesame Street. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 21:37, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Different translation?
Edit
The anti-Sesame diatribe in Sovietsa Kultura was apparently translated differently in different sources. The current source is the New York Times, but Jet has a different, but similar quote. Just archiving the link here for posterity. -- Zanimum 17:32, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
