About the Rubber Duck II

Isnt there any information about the company that made these ducks? Of where it was sold at the time? (Greetings Paul 14:55, March 15, 2010 (UTC))

About the Rubber Duckie

  • Did the rubber duck's popularity as a bathtoy arise largely from Sesame Street? Or was it popular before it was seen on the program? George B. (talk) 15:38, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
It existed decades prior to the series, at least as far back as the 1920s (it crops up in P.G. Wodehouse novels. Ernie's rubber duckie has become an iconic *example*, and the sale of Habsro Rubber Duckie toys, based specifically on the Sesame character, resulted, but it had nothing to do with popularizing rubber squeaky waterfowl toys in general, or at least not establishing its popularity and familiarity as a comforting object. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 17:39, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
(cross-posted with Andrew) - According to wikipedia, rubber toys such as ducks first appeared in the late 19th cent. So yeah, The toy existed long before Sesame Street, and it makes sense that Rubber Duckie was chosen because it would be a familiar toy that children watching the show might have themselves. Aside from sales of Hasbro, how would you even quantify "popular" in this case? -- Wendy (talk) 17:51, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Okay. I had a reference I was thinking of posting, but it only really made sense if that were the case --- that Sesame Street had popularized it. Do you think maybe some of the history should find its way into the article, or maybe we should link to Wikipedia? George B. (talk) 22:18, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
I wouldn't include any generic reference to rubber duckies unless the context is sufficient to suggest that the Sesame Street duckie was being evoked. And history or Wikipedia link, that's up to you really. I'd personally say the latter works better, since here we're talking about a single Rubber Duckie, Ernie's closest inanimate friend. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 22:24, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Good idea --- I'll add the Wikipedia link. Edit --- drat --- how do you get it so that it links to the right article? George B. (talk) 22:32, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I actually think that the history of the rubber duck would be an interesting trivia note. I didn't know any of the stuff that was mentioned on this page until just now, and I'm glad I know it now. I say add it to the page. -- Danny (talk) 22:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Sounds good to me! I'll put that on priority for later this evening, unless somebody else gets to it first. George B. (talk) 23:02, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
