Belafonte

According to Craig Shemin at the Muppets, Music & Magic event, Harry Belafonte had sung this song many times on television before his appearance on The Muppet Show, but went along with the script for the sake of the joke. Wikipedia is no help in finding out if this is true, does anyone know how to find out if he actually performed The Banana Boat Song elsewhere? — Joe (talk) 16:09, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't know if that really affects the page, but I'd be very surprised if he hadn't, considering how many variety show appearances he'd made before that, and the fact that it was his best known song. Only a few scripted Muppet Show "facts" about guests should be taken at face value. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 17:24, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
I figured it would make for a fun trivia tidbit, especially since The Muppet Show is incorrectly credited with the first TV instance of the song all over the internet. — Joe (talk) 18:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
I think it would make for a fun trivia note too. We should dig that info up and add it here. Especially considering Belafonte claims in the show that this would be the very first time he sang it on television. —Scott (talk) 18:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
The song appears on his Live from Carnegie Hall album on RCA Records. Peace. —MuzikJunky 21:16, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
True, but I don't see anywhere that this performance appeared on television.— Joe (talk) 15:07, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
I never saw Harry Belafonte's comment about it being his first televised performance as a joke, and I don't know if it was obviously a joke to anybody. And it had never occurred to me that facts like this about guest stars that were mentioned on the show could have been made up. --Minor muppetz 15:59, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
It's a joke, and the first performance was in 1955 on The Colgate Comedy Hour. Full details at Talk:Harry Belafonte. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 21:13, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
