Question about theoretical category
So, does this page qualify to be included in the Muppet Fandom category? Or is it too off the point since the D23 Expo deals with ALL aspects of The Walt Disney Company rather than just The Muppets Studio?--Gonzofan 21:06, October 14, 2011 (UTC)
- Any thoughts?--Gonzofan 16:12, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'd say no, for a couple reasons. One is that it's not something that arose out of Muppet Fandom or exclusively for Muppet fans, as you indicate. The other is the fact that, even though it caters to the fans, it's corporate run. With the sole exception of The Muppet Show Fan Club, everything in Muppet Fandom is stuff *by* fans. The closest comparison would be MuppetFest but even that's more clearly an exception, where as D23 Expo is closer to the San Diego Comic-Con, fan events with broader focuses and which also serve significant press release/promotional purposes (*especially* the D23 thing).
- In fact, it seems moreso than the Comic-Con since, while certainly they want to please the fans, I really don't see much room for participation *by* the fans, in the sense that Comic-Con allows for the masquerades, fan submissions to the souvenir book, and so on (and if there is, it's pretty clear that it wouldn't be just Muppety, but nothing here really suggests any Muppet fandom stuff). Everything else in "Fandom" outside of the two exceptions noted involved writing, drawing, campaigning, or something by Muppet fans (and clearly the Fan Club and *especially* Muppetfest were responses to Muppet fan followings, while the D23 things seem more promotional in general, as indicated by the slate of upcoming projects mixed with the fun appearances, and stuff like the Johnny Depp thing). So for now, unless Disney spins off a Muppet Fan Expo, I'd leave it as is. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 19:14, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, that cool. I just wanted to hear what someone had to say. For the record, I have been to both D23 Expos so far, and to be fair, its only the show floor that has to do with promotional stuff. All of the panels and arena presentations are phenomenal! (Especially the arena stuff!) Also, the D23 Expo allows people to dress up as well. It IS very much like Comic-con, it just deals with all things Disney related. John Lasseter sees it as an opportunity to give back to the fans.--Gonzofan 22:32, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
I had totally forgotten about it until I saw the Myzos page here on the wiki, but yes, I was at the Muppets presentation in 2009 and everyone who attended received a Myzos bracelet, so I added mention of it. Better late than never!-Gonzofan 06:36, August 30, 2011 (UTC)
