Should we merge?
While it's clear that Mahna Mahna and Bip Bippadotta are different characetrs by name and appearance, I think they should be merged. The only time I know of where the name Bip Bippadotta is used is on the album credits and listing for Every Body's Record, which from what I've read was the first recording of "Everybody's Song", which was performed on the show later. I believe that have seen a post at Mupet Central from a Sesame Workshop insider who seemed to imply that the song was recorded for the album before it was on the show (though I can't remember the thread title, nor can I remember if the thread was at the old delphi forum or the current one).
Now, I haven't seen that album in person, so I don't know if the inside or back cover has images of Bip Bippadotta, either with a name caption or right next to lyrics of the song. Jim Henson could have just used a random vocie, and when the track was used on the show, this character could have just been chosen because he had the same voice, though it would be weird for an initially audio-only track to have new characters listed by names, as opposed to being identified as "The Anything Muppets".
All album releases of the Sesame Street recording of "Mahna Mahna" refer to the characetr as "Mah-Na Mah-Na", or "Mah-Na Mah-Na Muppet". Of course, Bip looks significantly different in "Mahna Mahna", hardly like the Mahna Mahna character, and you could say that that character is supposed to be different. But all of this characters clips at sesamestreet.org list him as "Mah-Na Mah-Na Muppet", while the clip descriptions only refer to him as "a man". I haven't actually searched for Bip Bippadotta, so I might need to. Finally, I know that Mahna Mahan appears in the finales for The Muppet Movie and The Muppets Take Manhattan, and appears in the audience in The Muppets: A Celebration of 30 Years, while Bip doens't. If they are meant to be different then they should have both been there, to help confirm that they are different (though the average watcher might not even notice whetehr either is there).
So, I am wondering if we should at least merge Mahna Mahna (character) and Bip Bippadotta. Mahna Mahna Through the Years includes both characters, after all. --Minor muppetz 01:05, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have that album, and it isn't gatefold, so there aren't any pictures other than the front cover. The label just has song titles, so the only vocal credit is what's on the back cover, which is what's on the album's page. -- Ken (talk) 05:25, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Was Bip Bippadotta lavender?
I just realized, I think Bip Bippadotta was lavender on other songs besides Everybody songs.
