Who owns shorts?

Who owns the rights to the shorts shown on Sesame Street? I would have thought, since CTW/SW commissioned them, they'd own the rights.

It's one thing for the DVD The Pixar Shorts: A Short History to include the Sesame Luxo Jr. segments, but I just saw a DVD at a dollar store, where the claymation Arnold is supposedly included. (I hope to get back there and buy it, hopefully it's still there.) But every other DVD I've bought from a dollar store includes public domain or really low quality animated series episodes. They've never included anything made in the past 30 years.

Does anyone know whether interstitials are usually owned by the Workshop, or the creators? -- Zanimum 19:23, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Only one Arnold short was made for Sesame Street. The rest are owned by Bartlett, but released on festival VHS tapes back in the 1990s. Now they're surfacing on cheap dollar DVDs, claiming to be public domain but not really; it's more a "grey market" issue, where they do it until someone notices and complains. So the general ownership issue (which generally depends on the nature of the project and individual contracts) doesn't come into play. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 19:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
