SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated series which debuted on Nickelodeon on 1999 and soon became one of the channel's lynchpin series.

In It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, while watching Kermit's flight on a video screen, the Boss tells Daniel he's "just lucky SpongeBob isn't on."

Sesame Street spoofed the series through Bob's alter-ego, Trianglebob Trianglepants.

The character also appeared in the We Are a Family music video.

Tim Blaney played the Goofy Goober in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
David Hasselhoff appeared as himself in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
Patrick Pinney played Painty the Pirate, the buccaneer artwork who sings the series' theme song
