Spalding Monster appeared in the Monsterpiece Theater episode, "Monster in a Box" (which Spalding himself wrote), where he was supposed to be in the box, and instead was under the box and on the box. So Alistair Cookie gave him a hand. He also appeared in the Monsterpiece Theater episode "Room at the Top", performed this time by David Rudman.

His name is a reference to Spalding Gray, an actor and playwright, and his performance film Monster in a Box, consisting entirely of Gray's monologue.
