Spalding Gray (1941-2004) was an American actor, playwright, and screenwriter. He is most famous as a monologist, with his most famous pieces, Monster in a Box and Swimming to Cambodia. Monster in a Box was spoofed on Sesame Street with an episode of "Monsterpiece Theater" of the same name, where Spalding Monster crawls in and out of his box.
As an actor, Gray made multiple appearances on The Nanny and appeared in a handful of feature films, including Beaches (with Bette Midler).
