The Songwriters Hall of Fame is part of the National Academy of Popular Music and was founded in 1969 by Johnny Mercer, Abe Olman, and Howie Richmond.

Kermit the Frog performed at the June 14, 2001 ceremony, which honored honorees Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Gloria Estefan (among others).
