"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a 1991 song by the American grunge/alternative rock band Nirvana. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's first and biggest hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100; the song received many critical and cultural acclaim, including topping the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll, winning two MTV Video Music Awards for its music video, and being the subject of a parody by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
In It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, penguins squawk along with the guitar riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," similar to the way it was used in Moulin Rouge.
The song is covered by the Muppets Barbershop Quartet in The Muppets. Many of the song's questionable lyrics were either changed or sung by Beaker, who could only sing in "meeps."
This version was criticized by Courtney Love, bandleader Kurt Cobain's widow, as it was done without her knowledge. However, both Dave Grohl and Jack Black, who appeared in the movie, found no problem with it.
