Shelley and Elmo, introducing Sesamestreet.org's "Happy Homes for Animals Day."

Shelley the Turtle appeared on Sesame Street primarily during the late 1980s and early 1990s, first appearing in Episode 2007. Shelley was a friendly but slow turtle, demonstrating that animals, like people, can accomplish things at different paces. In one episode it is suggested (by sounds) that he is able to store many different things inside his shell, including a television set.

He has a few solo musical numbers, including "I Get There" and "Friends with Slow Paces."

He later starred in Episode 3750, with the same voice but referred to in the dialogue only as "The Turtle," where he attempted to join the menagerie on Old MacDonald's farm. He made a cameo in Episode 3513, not referred to by name but retaining the same voice and personality as well.

The puppet has appeared as a tortoise in Elmo's World: Hair (performed by Matt Vogel). He also appeared in Episode 4026 with a new shell and was named Seymour.

He resurfaced by name (performed again by Matt Vogel, but with a different voice), on Sesamestreet.org in the 2000s; appearing with Elmo in the days called "Mommy Time," "Happy Homes for Animals Day," and "Fun with Elmo Day."

The puppet was later refurbished as a sea turtle named Morty (performed by David Rudman) in Episode 5133.
