Originally performed on Eddie Cantor's radio show in November 1934, "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" was an instant hit, selling hundreds of thousands of copies of the sheet music. The first recorded version was made the following September by Joe Harris with Benny Goodman and his Orchestra. The song was a number 1 hit for The Jackson 5 in 1970, and has been recorded by numerous other artists. It has also inspired a Rankin/Bass special.
In A Muppet Family Christmas, Baby Piggy, Baby Kermit, Baby Fozzie, Baby Rowlf, Baby Scooter, Baby Animal and Baby Gonzo sing the song in the home movie of their first Christmas.
A 1963 recording by the Crystals was used in A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa.
