Sally Ride (1951-2012) was a physicist and former astronaut for NASA. She was a member of the Space Shuttle 7 crew in June 1983, becoming the first American woman to go into outer space. The following year, in January of 1984, she taped segments for Sesame Street, including a skit in which she demonstrates the letter A, as in astronaut.
In documentary footage from production on Fraggle Rock, included in the Fraggle Rock: Complete First Season box set, designer Faz Fazakas recalled that Ride was a friend of writer Jerry Juhl, and claims that she practiced with the technology used in the Doozer Vehicles prior to operating the shuttle's robotic arm.
