Transitioning from such roles as the lisping brother in The Music Man and Opie on The Andy Griffith Show (co-starring Don Knotts), Howard starred as Richie Cunningham on the television series Happy Days.

He appeared in character as Richie, opposite Henry Winkler (as the Fonz), in sketches on Sesame Street.
