R2-D2 is a small, people-friendly droid from the Star Wars films, in which he is the counterpart of C-3PO. The droid was played by Kenny Baker in the six Star Wars films. For The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, a "three footed" R2 robot was used, performed by radio control. Many times R2-D2 is credited as "Himself".
R2-D2 has appeared in all six Star Wars movies, an animated series called Droids, the more recent animated Clone Wars series, The Star Wars Holiday Special, Star Tours, The Donny and Marie Show and numerous television commercials over the years. His name is sometimes spelled Artoo-Detoo.
