Polly Smith joined the Muppet Workshop in 1980, designing puppet costumes and occasionally characters for the final season of The Muppet Show. In the next few years, she designed costumes for Fraggle Rock and co-designed the Muppet costumes for a John Denver Muppet special. She received Emmy nominations for her designs for The Jim Henson Hour and Muppets Tonight. She later expanded, designing costumes for the actors as well as the puppets, designing various period fairy-tale outfits for The StoryTeller, which won her a BAFTA award, and The StoryTeller: Greek Myths, for which she which received a BAFTA nomination. As head costume designer for such films as The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, Smith oversaw the attire of human and Muppet cast members, notably designing the hand-painted and tie-dyed garbage gown of The Queen of Trash in the latter film.
