"Pachalafaka" was sung by a Whatnot named Hashim[1] (Jim Henson) in Turkey in The Muppet Show episode 103. At the end of the song, the harem girl who whispered the word Pachalafaka to the tourist removed the scarf covering her face, revealing herself to be a mustached man.
Although "Pachalafaka" was first recorded by composer Irving Taylor on an album entitled Terribly Sophisticated Songs, it was later popularized by comedian Soupy Sales, whose first recording of the song was released in 1965.
A recording of the song by Earl Brown had previously been used a number of times on Sam and Friends, lip-synced to by Moldy Hay.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
As explained in Muppet Morsels from The Muppet Show Season One DVD release, this song was originally meant to be the UK Spot for the show, but after deciding that the episode was short on songs, "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Disappearing Clues" was designated as the UK Spot instead.
