Newt is a spoof of Representative Newt Gingrich, who was then Speaker of the US House of Representatives and a recognizable cultural figure. Gingrich was also spoofed on Larry King Live with the character Gingrich the Newt, a distant cousin of Kermit who was elected Speaker of the Swamp.
