Murphy Brownbag, a talking paper lunchbag, appeared in a segment on Sesame Street as the host of the show "Lunch Talk". Her guest was Mr. Cookie Monster, who described the elements of a healthy monster lunch: a peanut butter sandwich, a carrot, an oatmeal cookie, and a sneaker. While Murphy can understand why the food make up a good meal, she questions why a sneaker is a part of it. Cookie explains that the shoe makes up a healthful monster's dinner.

Murphy was based on the fictional character Murphy Brown from the show of the same name. Candice Bergen, who played Brown, poked fun at herself as the voice of Brownbag.
