Mr. Essex was a school teacher who appeared in a Sesame Street insert, during which his students sang "Muppets Rhyme in School."

In an instance of Same Puppet, Different Character, he also appeared in Numberella where he was the disc jockey for the Prince's party. He was performed here by Jerry Nelson, as his only line said at the arrival of Numberella was "Stop the music!"
