The Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (or "The MAX," formerly called the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center) was approved in 2001 by the Mississippi state legislature and opened on April 18th, 2018. The museum's purpose is to celebrate the richness and depth of the legacy of Mississippi's arts and artists. The museum houses a Hall of Fame and a Walk of Fame, featuring celebrated Mississippians.

On December 16, 2017, the first stars on the Walk of Fame were unveiled (a few months prior to the official museum opening), and included one for Jim Henson. Cheryl Henson was present at the ceremony.

Kermit the Frog sits on the Honorary Celebrity Committee for the Center, along with Lance Bass, Faith Hill, Jimmy Buffett, and Morgan Freeman.

The museum's splash page includes the text "Elvis. Faulkner. Kermit. King. [alternating with Oprah.] When it comes to entertainment, Mississippi is a land of legends."
