Mom's portrait in Miss Piggy's Guide to Life

Illustration in The Case of the Missing Mother

Miss Piggy's Mother gave birth to Miss Piggy, but is seldom seen or mentioned. The earliest known reference occurred in a 1979 People magazine article, which quoted Frank Oz's version of Piggy's back story. According to Oz, Piggy's relationship with both parents was strained, since her mother "never found time to develop her mind," and Piggy vowed she'd rather die than become a domestic drudge.

By the 1980s, however, the presentation of Piggy's mother is considerably softened. In a photo illustration in Miss Piggy's Guide to Life demonstrating a fashionable business career, Piggy's office is adorned with a large, hanging portrait of her mother.

The May 23, 1982 entry of The Muppets comic strip features Piggy attempting to commune with her (living) mother during a crystal ball service offered by "The Great Gonzo: Mystic." When Gonzo attempts to contact her on the device, he gets a busy signal, confirming to Piggy that he has indeed reached her.

Her portrait is seen again in the storybook The Case of the Missing Mother, resembling the previous photo version. Piggy recalls that when she was a piglet her mother would tell her "Piggy, someday you'll be a star." Piggy talked about her mother stating "Ah she was so wise, so dear. So very much like moi, in fact."

Depicted in her youth for the Muppet Kids books, Piggy occasionally mentions her mommy, as in Piggy Gets the Jitters (where she's present, but unseen). In Piggy Can't Wait, Piggy's Aunt Wiggy comes to visit for two months. At the end of her stay, Piggy's mom (shown only partially in frame) serves up a salad using the vegetables they grew in the garden together.

In a December 23, 1993 interview on Larry King Live, Piggy stated that she no longer talks to her mother.

The 2021 Muppet Babies episode "The Mystery of the Missing Pearls," features Baby Piggy taking her mother's pearl necklace without asking for permission, only to find out that somebody else will do the same to her. The item's design and significance indicate that adult Piggy's signature pearl necklace might in fact later be directly inherited from her mother.
