Maurice

Maurice with Cookie, Grover, Telly and Herry.

Maurice Monster is a light blue monster with a bright green nose.

The puppet debuted in Season 7 of Sesame Street and was used frequently as a background monster from 1975 - 1984. He continued to make appearances in productions as recent as 2003. He is one of the longest running background character -- no other Muppet has been around that long without becoming a main character.

He made his debut (as "Elmo Mondiporg", played by Jim Henson) in a sketch where Grover finds an empty telephone booth, and was an Anything Muppet draped entirely in blue fur (and the blue fur would be turned into an Anything Monster). He was given the name Maurice Monster in the game show sketch, "Say the Word". He appeared as one on the Frazzletones in 1975 singing the song "Frazzle" with Frazzle himself. And in Season 13, he was featured in Monsterpiece Theater's "Me Claudius" along with Harvey,Kermit the Grof, and Elmo.

The puppet was used as Kermit the Gorf in The Wonderful World of T-Shirts sketch where Kermit the Frog tries to buy a customized T-shirt with his name on it.

The monster was usually performed by Jerry Nelson; but on some occasions Richard Hunt, Jim Henson and several others would take on the role as needed.
