Mary Mary Quite Contrary is a character from the nursery rhyme of the same name. She appears on Sesame Street in a 2009 episode to make a garden around Oscar's trash can. However, her initial idea of a garden consists of silver bells, cockle shells and pretty maids in a row, none of which grow in a garden. Aided by her assistant, Mother Goose, she plants beautiful flowers around the can. Oscar attempts to make her move fail. He brings in Hairy Hairy More Contrary to mess up the garden, but she finds it delightful looking still. It isn't until she learns Oscar likes the garden that she moves.
As her name describes, she is quite contrary and does the contrary of what people want her to do.
