John Aylward (b. 1946) is a character actor who played Mr. Joe Bowman in the Jim Henson Pictures film Buddy. A veteran of film and television, Aylward has often been cast as dower businessmen, judges, and other serious professionals, and may be most familiar as the gruff Dr. Anspaugh on ER, a role he has played for over ten years now. Other TV credits include The Others (regular as Albert McGonagle), The West Wing (recurring as former DNC chair Barry Goodwin), Alias, Law & Order, Boston Legal, Northern Exposure, and 3rd Rock from the Sun, among others.

In film, Aylward has appeared in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Armageddon, Thirteen Days, Just Visiting, and Down with Love. On stage, he has appeared in the works of Shakespeare and Moliere and more modern plays such as Death of a Salesman and Waiting for Godot.
