James Fox (b. 1939) is an English actor who played Dr. Bates in Gulliver's Travels. Fox began his film career in the 1960s, playing handsome rivals (The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, 1962), victims (The Servant, 1963), or romantic leads (opposite Sarah Miles in Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines and Julie Andrews in Thoroughly Modern Millie).

Following his portrayal of a vicious thug in Performance (1970), due to personal issues, Fox took a ten year hiatus from performing, returning to play character roles in Passage to India (along with his brother, actor Edward Fox), The Remains of the Day (as misguided Fascist Lord Darlington), Mickey Blue Eyes, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Television work has included the Masterpiece Theater mini-series The Choir (as Dean Cavendish, with Richenda Carey as his wife) and appearances in Agatha Christie's Poirot (as Col. Race in "Death on the Nile") and Marple (as Col. Arthur Bantry in "The Body in the Library").
