Howard Snake is one of the Riverbottom Gang members and the bass player of the Riverbottom Nightmare Band in the 1977 special Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. He resembles a rattlesnake.

The character's name was not mentioned in the original special; it has been used in the 2008 Goodspeed Opera House's stage adaptation.

On stage, the role of Howard was originated by James Silson.

Howard Snake later appeared during the "Rainbow Connection" finale of The Muppet Movie. He also appeared amidst a chorus of jungle animals during the "Civilization" number in episode 404 of The Muppet Show

  • Dabs of hot glue coating the puppet's fabric were used to give Howard his scaly look. The glue was then painted to look like scales. The same technique was used for Fred Lizard.
