Bert performed the song in the Sesame Place stage show, Elmo Rocks!, while trying to explain how he doesn't fit in a rock group. The song was parodied on Sesame Street with an animated song, "It's Hip to Be a Square."
In a Baby Talk sketch, when Baby Natasha's guest, a square, comes onstage, her house band plays a short riff based on "Hip to Be Square."
