The Evolution of Herry Monster (1970-present)
Image | As seen in | Year | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Sesame Street early Season 2 |
1970 | The first Herry puppet debuts in episode 0131, the Season 2 premiere. This puppet has a hairy blue nose that is sometimes hard to distinguish from the rest of his face. | |
Sesame Street later Season 2 |
1971 | Herry is rebuilt with a smooth blue nose. He also has a tongue. | |
Sesame Street Season 3 |
1971-1978 | In Season 3, Herry's nose color changes from blue to purple. The puppet has a fuller, bushier eyebrow, with a mechanism allowing it to move up and down. | |
Sesame Street Season 10 |
1978-1986 | The design is similar to the previous puppet with some minor changes; the most evident being a slightly thinner brow and nose, which will continue to morph and decrease in size over the next couple of decades. | |
Sesame Street Season 18 |
1986-1992 | Herry's nose now reaches to the tip of his eyebrow (that is when it’s fully raised), filling the gap in-between. Because of this, his nose is now somewhat tear-drop shaped. | |
Sesame Street Season 20 |
1988-1997, 2008-present | Herry is resculpted with a more positive expression and a different head shape, resulting in a smaller mouth and a shorter eyebrow. He has longer, shaggier fur, and a shorter nose. | |
Sesame Street Season 29 |
1997-2004 | Herry is rebuilt again with a head shape resembling the 70’s puppet. Likewise, his nose is larger. However, it also becomes a solid tear-drop shape, causing his eyes to further slant towards each other. His eyebrow is at its thinnest.
By 2001 (with the exception of The Street We Live On, as well as several Macy’s Parades), Herry has been mostly retired from the show. Though, in his brief return for the 2008 Macy’s Parade and a cameo in Episode 4206, he’s appeared to have reverted back to the previous design. |
