Harry Lange, from The Making of the Dark Crystal

Harry Lange (1930-2008) was a German production designer and art director for film. He served as production designer on The Great Muppet Caper and The Dark Crystal. The book The Making of the Dark Crystal shows his designs for key sets such as the Skeksis banquet room and the Emperor's bedchamber.

Lange escaped from Soviet-controlled East Germany, studying art in West Germany before moving to New York City. He was drafted during the Korean War but used his art background illustrating training manuals. This led to work in the 1950s illustrating proposed spacecraft and eventually designing actual spacecraft for what became NASA, as well as supplying art for books on spaceflight co-authored by Wernher von Braun.[1]

In 1965, Lange's career shifted again, when an encounter with Arthur C. Clarke led to a meeting with Stanley Kubrick and work as production designer and consultant on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He put his aeronautic background to use again on Moonraker, consulting on space scenes in Superman II, and the original Star Wars trilogy in various capacities. Other film credits include Kelly's Heroes and Monty Python's the Meaning of Life.
