Happy Girl Meets a Monster is a variety show sketch that was adapted as a sketch on The Muppet Show.
In the sketch, a female Muppet is enjoying a beautiful day outside when a mean monster arrives to spoil it. With a wave of his hand and a few grunts, he makes dark clouds appear, although the optimistic girl says that she likes rainy days as well.
The monster does whatever he can to ruin everything that is beautiful to the girl. As she enjoys the sound of a bird whistling, he shoots the bird. The girl tells him that he's awful -- but he's so awful that actually he's beautiful, a beautiful example of perfect awfulness. Embarrassed and upset, the monster shrinks. When the monster is small enough, the girl smacks the monster with a flyswatter.
This sketch was performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on May 11, 1969, with Little Girl Sue and Beautiful Day Monster. The sketch was also performed on a number of other variety shows in the late 60s. In 1977, the sketch was remade with Madeline Kahn and Doglion on episode 209 of The Muppet Show.
