A guy and his doll

Guys and Dolls is a musical by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Based on the writings of Damon Runyon, it tells the story of "Guys" Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson and their respective "Dolls," Miss Adelaide and Sister Sarah Brown.

The musical opened on Broadway in 1950, ran for three years, and garnered five Tony Awards. It has since become a staple of community and regional theatres, as well as enjoyed two successful revivals on Broadway, including one with an all African-American cast.

Selections performed in Muppet Productions

  • The song lyrics to "Fugue for Tinhorns" provided the only on-screen reference of any name for "Paul Revere," first seen in episode 221.

  • Nathan Lane played Nathan Detroit in the 1992 Broadway revival
  • Imelda Staunton played a Hot Box Girl and understudied Miss Adelaide in the 1982 London revival at The National Theatre. She then played Miss Adelaide in a subsequent National Theatre revival (in the mid 1990s).
