The Evolution of Gonzo (1970-present)
Image | As seen in | Year | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
The Great Santa Claus Switch | 1970 | Gonzo started life as Snarl, the Cigar Box Frackle. | |
The Muppet Show Season 1 |
1976 | Snarl is now Gonzo and wears a purplish-red tuxedo. In the first season, performer Dave Goelz underplayed Gonzo's emotions, as the puppet was designed with a permanently sad look. The producers noticed that he worked better in a more energetic form, so Goelz made a new puppet for season 2 with modified eyes that have movable eyelids which helped make him a more active character. An altered version of this puppet with blue eyelids and an even more depressed look was used for one of the openings for the second season of The Muppet Show. | |
The Muppet Show Season 2 |
1977-1978 | Gonzo's eyelids are now yellow-green and can move back and forth, allowing Gonzo to look more excited. His nose isn't as blue as before. | |
The Muppet Show Season 3 |
1978-1981 | Starting with Season 3, excluding the opening, Gonzo wears the purplish-red tuxedo very often. And was replaced in late season 3 episodes with a lavender tuxedo with a redish bow tie. He was also rebuilt a bit. Gonzo's eyes were improved, but his nose was the same. For this season, when Dave Goelz performes Gonzo, it resembles to the current pitch. | |
The Muppet Movie | 1978 - 1980 | Gonzo's eyelids are now orange-yellow. Gonzo's nose is now tan with a little blue in it. He now wears a light blue shirt and a black vest with a blue visor. He would occasionally wear this for seasons 4 and 5 of The Muppet Show in addition to his purplish-red and lavender tuxedoes. | |
The Great Muppet Caper | 1981 | Gonzo has a slightly bigger physique and now has a tan coat and a sweater vest for his role as an ace photographer in The Great Muppet Caper. | |
The Jim Henson Hour | 1984-1991 | Gonzo retained his sweater vest from The Great Muppet Caper, looking a bit like Bill Cosby in The Cosby Show. Gonzo sports this look in The Muppets Take Manhattan, A Muppet Family Christmas, The Jim Henson Hour, The Muppets at Walt Disney World, Muppet*Vision 3D and The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson. | |
The Muppet Christmas Carol | 1992-1996 | Gonzo's eyelids now overlap, giving him a slightly more demented look. His nose is variations of purple, blue, and tan. During the storybook-adaptation era for the Muppets, Gonzo usually appeared in clothing befitting the time period of the story. Gonzo can be seen in this form in The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. | |
Muppets Tonight | 1996-2001 | Continuing a sartorial style first glimpsed in 1990s commercials and Muppet Classic Theater, Gonzo's typical attire now includes a loud jacket, wild tie, and other "hip" and unusual clothing elements, in contrast to his earlier suit or daredevil outfit. In addition to Muppets Tonight, Gonzo appeared in this clothing again in Muppets from Space and at MuppetFest. | |
It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie | 2002-2009 | Gonzo returns to wearing a suit as he did during his Muppet Show days, but now sports a necktie instead of a bowtie. Gonzo's nose is now just tan. | |
D23 Expo | 2009-present | Gonzo is resculpted entirely, donning a thicker, very blue nose. His pupil size was reduced and his eyelids are now orange-yellow again like the late-70's puppet. The same new puppet was also used for some of the Give a Day. Get a Disney Day. commercials. Gonzo is also bigger, most noticeable from his head and hands. |
