A Gnu appeared in the musical number, "The Gnu," as seen in episode 519 of The Muppet Show. Per the lyrics to the song, the gnu pronounces "G"s and "K"s in words where they are meant to be silent, and adds them in other words where they do not exist. He also appeared in a few other episodes of the show.

The modified version of this character was given the name Frankie the Wildebeest in episode 109 of The Animal Show and Frankie Yakovic in episode 107 of Muppets Tonight. The original version also showed up in The Animal Show episode 306, Muppet Treasure Island, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland and Season 33 of Sesame Street. On Mopatop's Shop the puppet was reused as various characters like King Gnu, Galloping Gordon, and a nameless gnu.
