The Gene Shalit Muppet offered a scathing review of Return to Beneath the Planet of the Pigs in The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence. However, he was eventually replaced by a pig version of him who gave the film "5 oinks."

The puppet was also featured on the PBS special Sesame Street at Night? which was hosted by the actual Gene Shalit.
