DEBUT 1997
DESIGN Eric Engelhardt designer/builder

Gary Cahuenga is a ventriloquist's dummy with a mind of his own. In their heyday, he and his ventriloquist Chick guested on all the TV variety shows. Gary was locked in a trunk in the KMUP studios for decades until Clifford and Rizzo found him in episode 210 of Muppets Tonight.

Gary also appears in episode 201, and attempts to convince 20px-Prince_symbol.svg.png to put an act together with him.

The character and his backstory were originally pitched by Dave Goelz, based on his own childhood fascination with puppets and ventriloquist dummies. Goelz conceived that his ventriloquist Chick Fernando got stage fright just before a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show and fled town, leaving Gary behind in his box. His design and first name are based on Muppets Tonight director Gary Halvorson, which was done at the suggestion of Steve Whitmire. Halvorson received a replica of the character, without any of the facial mechanisms within, as a gift after the show.[1][2] His last name is a reference to Cahuenga Boulevard, a major Hollywood thoroughfare.
