In the 2016 Sesame Street special, Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas, Louie tells Elmo a story taking place on Sesame Street in the 19th Century. As such, many of the present-day characters' great-great grandfathers (or monsters, grouches and birds) appear, whose names and physical appearances are mostly identical.

Picture Description
OnceSSXmas-Grover
Grover

Grover's great-great grandmonster, who lives a couple of blocks away from Sesame Street, is a traveling salesman.

His appearance is identical to his future relative, but with a larger, light purple nose and blue eyelids.

OnceSSXmas-Oscar
Oscar the Grouch

Oscar's ancestor is named "Oscar the Malcontent." Due to the unfriendly nature of the street at the time, Oscar is ironically considered the nicest guy in town.

Compared to Oscar the Grouch, this variation has an added hairdo. His present day dumpster unit is replaced with boxes and rags akin to his trash can area used from Season 6 to Season 45.

OnceSSXmas-Johnson
Mr. Johnson

Mr. Johnson's ancestor is the local constable and father of Becky. Though not given a name in the story, the book adaptation identifies him as Constable Johnson.

He has much more hair than his distant relative, with a much longer mustache.

OnceSSXmas-2Head
Two-Headed Monster

Like his descendant, this two-headed monster runs a newspaper stand and has trouble getting along with himself.

OnceSSXmas-Cookie
Cookie Monster

Cookie's mustachioed ancestor is the proprietor of a cookie shop, in place of what would become Hooper's Store. At first, he eats the cookies he makes (from his Nana Monster's recipe), but starts sharing them when he sees other acts of kindness.

OnceSSXmas-Elmo
Elmo

Elmo's great-great grandmonster, and his namesake, moves to Sesame Street and comes bearing enough kindness and holiday spirit to inspire its residents.

His appearance is identical to his descendant, but with added hair and a slightly larger, yellow-orange nose.

OnceSSXmas-Louie
Louie

Louie's great-great grandmonster, who has thicker hair and muttonchops, shows his son their new address: 123 Sesame Street.

OnceSSXmas-BB
Big Bird

Big Bird's ancestor was just passing through while migrating south for the winter when he stops to help Elmo and Grover decorate Sesame Street.

Compared to his future relative, this Big Bird has purple rings around his eyelids and wears a vest and cuffs.

OnceSSXmas-ErnieBert
Ernie and Bert

Ernie and Bert's forefathers are portrayed as a duo of traveling performers.

Bert is given a thick, handlebar mustache with curved edges on his unibrow. Ernie is given a pair of muttonchop sideburns.
